CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DRAW
First knock-out round: Real Madrid v Juventus Porto v Inter Milan Barcelona v Chelsea Werder Bremen v Lyon Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen PSV Eindhoven v Monaco Man Utd v AC Milan Bayern Munich v Arsenal |
Arsenal - Munich
|
 - Kahn v Lehmann
Battle of the German keepers |
Can't wait for Barca - Chelsea in particular
|
Lehman probably won't be getting his game and Kahn is 1000x times better
|
Wow.....Liverpool have the best chance of getting through IMO
|
Yeah totaly wouldn't be shocked to see Liverpool as the last English team next round
|
Wouldn't be writing any of the other teams off though. It's a long time till the ties still
|
Predictions anyone?
Real Madrid v Juventus FC Porto v Inter Milan Barcelona v Chelsea Werder Bremen v Lyon Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen PSV v Monaco Man Utd v AC Milan Bayern Munich v Arsenal |
Wouldn't write us off, Ogen
Real Madrid v Juventus FC Porto v Inter Milan Barcelona v Chelsea Werder Bremen v Lyon Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen PSV v Monaco Man Utd v AC Milan Bayern Munich v Arsenal |
So Man Utd did get Milan.
|
Yeah, that's what the whole "Man United v AC Milan" thing is about
|
Still contemplating whether I should get a ticket for the Camp Nou, I went 5 years ago and I would love to go again, BUT we never win when I go to away games, except Fulham in the League Cup and what with it being the first leg it's not as important, I do really wanna go though.
|
Pretty good draw, quite a few games look class on paper.
|
I think it's time for payback and this time there's no Lucio to score. :)
|
Real Madrid v Juventus
Porto v Inter Milan Barcelona v Chelsea Werder Bremen v Lyon Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen PSV Eindhoven v Monaco Man Utd v AC Milan Bayern Munich v Arsenal |
Thats my only real hope of us beating Leverkusen, the fact that Ballack and Lucio...Ze Roberto, Neuville etc... are all gone

Just remember that ordinary side beat Madrid, as awful as they can be, 3-0 in the group stages and are extremely hard to get anything against when they are at home. Without a doubt, the Pool need a win, and a substantial one, at Anfield.
As for the other English teams, could go either way in them all. As a United supporter, am really excited about the game, should be one to remember. Chelsea/Barcelona should be an absolutely amazing game, and completely rests on how well Chelsea defend in my eyes. I do think Terry in the past CAN be shown up at the highest level and it does not get much higher than Ronaldinho. If he stands up to him and outshines him, Campbell and Ferdinand might have to step aside for good. Arsenal on prem form should beat the out of sorts, Bayern, but they are still dangerous, Makaay can score from anywhere and Ballack is a menace. Combine that with arsenal's poor Euro form and they could have real problems. |
Yeah Leverkusen beat Madrid but Madrid aren't the strongest of sides at the moment on the basis of form. Leverkusen are an ordinary side, nothing compared to the one who we lost to a couple of seasons back.
The only thing that worries me is that the players won't be as motivated as if were playing someone like Milan. They've shown that a few times this season. |

I hope we don't sell him anyway, he's a great passer and very creative and if you watch him play you'd realise all this "he never tackles" bollocks is rubbish. He won us the game against West Brom.</font> |
DAVID CONNOLLY
Should have beaten the Trees but i'll take the point given it was an injury time equaliser. |
Hey all, am I the first here to notice that Wee Gooner and Yianni are scum?
Yours sincerely, Fungry |
Whatever, Y2C

Plenty of teams have neutralised Ronaldinho, this season and last. |
I think we have AC milan. most of them are getting on, and although they have a great team, i think if we take the game to them, we'll be fine.
|
Their team isn't that old. Just a few of the defenders. They've got a much better (and younger) midfield and attack.

Truth is ECG, if John Terry was Irish, you would say he is alot better then Rio Ferdinand. |

Real rejected Liverpools bid for Morienties want first refusal on Gerrard as part of it
|
Well Morientes has as good as handed in a transfer request, so I think its just a case of Liverpool upping the offer to 5, 6 million.

Not as far as I know. Rio is one of the best defenders in the world. John Terry is a good defender, but that's as far as it goes. When John Terry goes to a World Cup and puts in the best performance out of anyone, in the whole competition, we'll call him as good as Rio Ferdinand. If Sol Campbell was any good, Arsenal wouldn't be such a defensive shambles. Campbell is just a big black defender who is good at heading it out of the box, like Ledley King. Useful, have their place, but not on the same level as Ferdinand, Nesta etc. Rio Ferdinand is a different class to John Terry. Like Stevie Gerrard is to Frank Lampard, a world class player to a solid Premiership workhorse. Ricardo Carvalho is world class, though. Love him. |
I agree with the order mate, and agree totally with what you said. Fact is Terry will only improve, he is a typically Englsih defender and as Campbell gets on, he will replace him.
As a United fan, I think Rio is the best in the business, but Eriksson has a tendency to go on team's form at times and I think that could work against Ferdinand. I was talking in how I felt Eriksson would look at things. Ferdinand is irreplaceable in my opinion, he is a superb techinical footballer and a calming influence to boot. Neither Terry or Campbell have that, despite Terry's goal threat, a positive that could see him replace Campbell. More clear? |
What, John Terry is at least equal to Carvalho, neither of them make mistakes, and Terry certainly doesn't look out of place next to him. Do you even watch Chelsea matches when they are on TV? I would say if anything Terry would get more recognition because he does the more memorable things like block shots and he also wins more headers. The pair of them are quality and I honestly wouldn't swap either of them for any defender in the world.
As for the Arsenal defensive shambles point, Toure and Cygan are the ones to blame, and obviously Lehmann, if Campbell is so bad then why did Barcelona want him when his contract with the yids expired. United have good keepers which is why they let in less, and the last world cup was two and a half years ago, wait till the next one and if Terry plays he will finally be able to get you to shut up. One last thing, I am aware that Ferdinand didn't play from January, but http://www.sporting-heroes.net/footb.../2003-04.htm#1 Arsenal let in the joint second least amount of goals at home, look who is in first place, thats right, Carvalho might be great, but he wasn't their last season, thats largely down to Terry and Carlo that we had the best home record in the league last season, and look who had the two best away record, I would say Arsenals great defensive record was much more to do with Campbell then anyone else, the guy is solid, and prevents alot of goals. |
They're good defenders, but Rio is one of the best in the world. Don't get me wrong on what I am saying here. Campbell does his job, but he is not on Rio's level. Talking about who wanted to sign him is moot. Barcelona were interested in Ian Harte at one stage, after all.
Also, I rate William Gallas very highly. Excellent player. Manchester United's season fell apart after Rio got banned last season, which shows how important he is to them. Once again, not saying Terry or Campbell are bad players. They are very good players, but they are not on Rio's level. He is up there with Nesta, Cannavaro, Puyol, Montero etc. |
You said "If Sol campbell was any good..." So from that it kinda makes it sound like you think he is shit.
Gallas was quality for years, now Mourinho plays him left back he makes mistakes and often wears the wrong studs, the amount of times he slips up is just retarded. And I really hate the way everyone says Ferdinand's ban was what lost them the league, granted, it was a huge blow, but Fergason's inability to realize what a shit set of defenders he had that season was the real reason, (I would say we will see who wins the league this season then but I still think United will :$) |
I think Sol Campbell is disgustingly overrated. Watching England in the summer showed how much they miss Rio, because all they could do was sit back on the edge of their own box and head things away.
It looks like great defending, but you watch someone like Carvalho, in the summer, who'd win the ball off the striker, beat a couple of men and set up another attack, and that to me is what a great defender does. Rio brings organisation and class to a team. The best defenders are genuine class footballers. United won't win the league this season. You're just trying not to curse Chelsea. It is their's to lose at this stage. But then I would have said the same about United this time last year. Chelsea just look a lot stronger, though. In saying that, if Duff and Robben got injured again, and they are both injury prone players, Chelsea could well be up shit creek. |
JIM SMITH dropped a giant clanger on his first day as Harry Redknapp’s No 2 at Southampton — by driving to PORTSMOUTH’S training ground!
Smith agreed on Wednesday to copy Redknapp’s controversial defection along the South Coast from Fratton Park to St Mary’s. But the Bald Eagle was left red-faced 24 hours later when he turned up at Pompey’s Southampton-based training HQ by accident — 10 MILES from where he was meant to be. Smith, 64, was greeted by baffled looks from Portsmouth staff before realising his mistake. He quickly jumped back into his BMW saloon and drove down the M27 to Saints’ base in the New Forest. Sheepish Smith admitted: “There was a bit of confusion. “I was not concentrating and I ended up at the wrong training ground. That put 10 minutes on my journey.” Smith also attacked Pompey supporters over their treatment of Redknapp following his switch to their bitter Premiership rivals. Redknapp was branded a Judas after taking charge at Saints earlier this month — just TWO WEEKS after quitting Fratton Park saying he needed a break from football. The pair have been forced to cancel an ‘Audience with Harry and Jim’ live show scheduled to take place in a Portsmouth theatre in the New Year because of fears for their safety. Smith rapped: “It is disgraceful that the fans have reacted in this way. “I can understand supporters wanting to beat Southampton and the Southampton fans wanting to beat Portsmouth — but Harry’s treatment is a disgrace. I have seen it before at Blackburn and Burnley but this has gone too far. <font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600"> especially the bit about them fearing for their safety. Nothing to do with the fact no one in Portsmouth is going to be particularly interested in buying tickets to a show to see their rival's manager? stupid old cunt</font> |
I've seen Campbell take players on against Chelesea before, not sure if he does against other teams, his run against Portsmouth shows what he can do, good thinking too. And like you say, King isn't all he is said to be, he can just had the ball, and Terry hardly had the greatest of tournaments, so I wouldn't blame it on Campbell, and he had a good World Cup '98 IMO.
ECG, can you honestly tell me you watch Chelsea matches this season? Maybe you could remind me when Carvalho has skinned anyone? I suppose maybe he may want to get more confident in the English game before trying to take players on, because at the moment I am sure he hasn't. Gallas is our only defender that take players on at the back. Terry and Carvalho both organisation and class to the team, I really do think that you haven't watched any of our matches on T.V, and not highlights as that obviously only rarely shows our defence :D, because the way they both deal with an attack is superb, Terry is always calm at the back and he is never out of position, always gets the job done, never looks like a mug and once Terry gets the recognition he deserves and becomes the man for England, everyone will be sucking his penis. I have said United will win hte league since June now, and I still believe it, Josè is so far up his own arse that just because he seems confident doesn't mean we all should be. Seriously, look at our fixtures, Anfield on New Years day, Arsenal lost their and we rarely do well their, United at OT in April, Arsenal at home in April, Southampton away that month and Harry will have them sorted by then, Bolton Away, thats four hard ties in April, and going to St James' Park on the last day of the season isn't the easiest fixture either, the league is far from won. Plus if we beat Barca in the Champions League we will have even more fucking matches in April. |
I don't mean simply taking men on once in a while, I mean a great defender has to be a great footballer also. I don't think Campbell or Terry are great footballers, and I think that certainly was evident when they played together at Euro 2004 and were unable to push out from the back and play it out from there. Either of them beside Rio Ferdinand would be excellent, but I think at the top level, they need someone of Rio's class there.
Good Premiership players, like Frank Lampard. Against the top teams, I think they're found wanting. I watched Norwich vs. Chelsea last Saturday, by the way, on Irish TV. |
Nice one, you would have watched that match, one of the only that Carvalho hasn't played in, but he really doesn't do more then his basic defending duties.
Campbell and Terry both had great seasons for their club but not too impressive ones for their countries, I'd blame Eriksson for being a moron too though, not just Terry and Campbell, seriously, you just remember them for not playing too well in a few games, they are great players. I really think they would be great if they played along side each other again. |
<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">Dazz, I agree with you about Terry being a class defender cos I really rate him, I wouldn't agree he's better than Rio Ferdinand but still.
I disagree with where you say he and Campbell are a good combination together. I agree with ECG that they don't work well together. I said this during Euro 2004 if Ferdinand was available id play him and Terry because whilst Campbell and Terry are both good defenders, neither are particularly composed on the ball like Rio is. I also don't think Campbell is that great. Im not saying he's bad or anything but out of the 3, id rather have Terry and Rio. ECG pretty much hit it on the head when he said Campbell was big black and good at heading :$</font> |
But then again, you are convinced that De Zeuuw isn't just a big fat slow lump.
|
Joleon Lescott is better than all of them
|
Hey remember when we scored ten goals against you in a season? Where was he to stop any of them?
|
So yeah Newcastle are shit then.
Just been to Myanmar for 2 weeks and you can watch way more Premiership games out there. Up to 4 on Sunday and 3 on Saturday and one on Monday its crazy. Had the displeasure of watching Newcastle Portsmouth and the game against Liverpool. Also watched the Arsenal Chelsea game though so its all good. We'l be lucky to finish top half at this rate and holy shit at the Champions League draw only saw it after reading this thread! |

Premiership coverage here is pretty awesome (if you have cable :y::D), like at least 3 or 4 live games a week, usually 3 live on saturday night and whatever other games during the week are usually live as well. |
<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">Theres one on Monday Night football, usually a couple on Super Sunday and then maybe one on a saturday. Then theres Prem Plus which shows 1 or 2 per weekend.
Then theres usually a couple of championship matches and 2 matches from La Liga </font> |
one on a saturday?
that's badlike |
Yeah like RBF said the coverage here is pretty good these days but in Asia it was practically every game live.
|
Personally I think there is too much football on TV these days. Less is more.
|
Quote:
|
There's normally 2 PPV games on Saturday, a PPV and free game on Sunday, and then the Monday night football. There's normally at least 2-3 La Liga games per weekend as well (normally but not always featuring Barca and/or Real Madrid), and there's Nationwide as well, although that's normally one game per Friday night and anything else is a bonus.
|
fucksake, lost at home to Rotherham. :|
|
GRRRRr thought the days of mid table mediocrity had left newcastle for good.
|
Aye?
|
I went to the Cardiff/Wolves game today as a neutral because I couldn't stand being stuck in this house much longer. I must say if I didn't know I would have said it were a league 2 game. The best bit was getting my chips at half time.
|
But you got to see Glenn Hoddle in person :'(
|
Not really the sun was in my eyes  I had to hold my programme on my forehead through it all.
|
Fuck Giggs was on fire against Bolton yesterday.
LOL at Campo's 'shot' |
Can someone confirm to me that Martin Tyler is either out of a job or is on his way out of Sky? I know Ian Darke has been told he will be announcing on live Premiership matches again.

<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">what?? Nooooo, Martin Tyler is the man :'(
on the plus side though, Ian Darke is a Pompey fan. Playing Chelsea tomorrow, Dazz said he was going so ill laugh if it rains ...actually I wont since the rain blows under the roof and I get wet when it rains </font> |
Tyler better not be out of a job

Villa United coming up we're gonna get hammered unfortunately we haven't a squad and injuries are piling up couple that with Angel, Barry etc.s terrible form and we're fecked
|
You'll pull something out of your arses, everyone aims up against ManYoo
|
<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">played Chelsea blah blah blah dominated first half they won.
Anyway, Dazz was on the pitch at half time doing the halftime game "total humilation". I thought it was him but i wasn't sure. He lost but was given £25 anyway. :D Berger spoke to him apparently :(</font> |

<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">going back to the John Terry/Rio Ferdinand debate. Whilst i still agree that Rio is teh better player, I have to say that after today's performance, John Terry is the best central defender ive seen at Fratton Park.
Thats not saying much since its only one match but still he was sheer class today. Terry and Rio for England.</font> |
Angel was crap tonight.

Still, good work Chelsea. |
Dazz shot down Patrik Berger
|
 He looked different, I really had no idea who it was, his hair was longer and he speaks like a proper Englishman, I didn't even think he was foreign, I thought he was prolly a groundsman, I only said Cheers because I am a nice guy.
|
<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">to be fair, i didnt recognise Berger when I first saw him, he was wrapped up warm.
But yes, you should've scored the first one, you were shit. Go home Mantle.</font> |
I am home, and the guy directing me didn't tell me how much time I had, he should have lined me up for the shot better, on the plus side I kicked the Portsmouth fan the second time. We even cheated too, the bloke said you cant touch the person to help him, only verbally tell him, but the guy kept pushing me and turning me, and trying to line me up, and it still didn't work.
|
Go shit a brick about it.
|
<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">yeah, i saw you kick the Pompey fan you dirty twat. Thats why you lost- karma. If i was sure it was you id probably have paid more attention.
Did you actually know the guy? :$ cos it would've been pretty weird if he was some guy you'd just met touching you up while you were blindfolded.</font> |
Ha Dazz shot down Patrik Berger and got sexually assaulted all in the same day.
GOOD TIMES. |
Davis (for Villa) is the worst young player I've seen in aaages. Absolute shite.
Also describe this halftime thing for those of us who haven't seen it :$ |
<font face=verdana size=3 color="#ff6600">yeah, my bad :$
they take 2 Chelsea fans and 2 Pompey fans and they blind fold one of each then spin them around then their partner had to guide them round a set of cones then they have to score from the penalty spot. They're not allowed to touch them, only talk/shout at them. They usually end up kicking eachother, kicking the air or putting the ball a mile wide. Its pretty funny, better than nothing.</font> |

Yeah we're second, didn't make it to the Leeds game. It's not my fault we lost to them.
