During Epic Games keynote at the Montreal International Game Summit, the founder of the company thinks development costs could easily double for the next generation of games.
While the basis by Tim Sweeney comes from their own “Samaritan” tech demo, he believes the new tech and tools needed to make great next gen games will end up causing development costs to skyrocket. To put it in perspective, Epic Games estimates to make a full game from their demo would currently cost about three to five times more the amount spent on current gen development.
He also believed the best solution to combat the growing costs would be for publishers to move away from the $60 exclusive platform games in favor of more multiplatform or free-to-play games instead.

“Free to play gaming is becoming more and more inevitable,” Sweeney explained. “If a user has world-class, AAA free-to-play games to choose from side-by-side with $60 games that are available only on a disc in a retail store, free-to-play games are very likely to win. So we need to really be mindful of this trend and start building games that have monetization and are designed to be piracy-proof.”
